An HVAC mechanical project engineer is typically employed by an air conditioning or ventilation manufacturer to support the project team and provide design information and technical solutions. Experience of project management is an advantage as the role will have a strong focus on ensuring planning and installation runs to schedule and processes are adhered to.

Day-to-day activities

The role of an HVAC mechanical project engineer will involve overseeing many different aspects of a project and communicating with all involved parties to make sure everything stays on schedule. Routine administrative duties will be an inevitable part of the role as will frequent phone calls to colleagues and clients to keep things on track and ensure everyone is fully informed as the project progresses.

Project engineers may also handle technical queries and manage the procurement of equipment and parts. They sit between the sales and technical teams, playing a pivotal role in the success of an installation.

Qualifications

Graduate mechanical engineers are highly sought after in the HVAC industry as the technical knowledge required in air conditioning and ventilation specification and design directly correlates to thermodynamics and heat transfer. Manufacturers of air conditioning and ventilation systems will value an HNC or degree level qualification in mechanical engineering or building services for a role of this kind and experience of project management and procurement will put candidates at a significant advantage when applying for a role as a mechanical project engineer. 

Skills and attributes

An HVAC mechanical project engineer will have an understanding of HVAC products and systems. Experience in CAD and similar design packages, project management software, Excel and PowerPoint are also desirable. Strong IT skills will be an advantage.

The role demands excellent communication skills and an aptitude for customer service.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working as part of a team and will need to be able to build and maintain strong relationships, both internally with different teams within the business and externally with clients and suppliers.

HVAC mechanical project engineers typically earn between £25,000 and £35,000 with additional company benefits.
